Phonetic reduction and pragmatic organisation in Dutch conversation A usage-based account

چکیده
This thesis explores the relationship between phonetic reduction and the pragmatic organisation of conversation, and the treatment of this relationship in phonological representation. It reports on an empirical investigation of pragmatic constraints on reduction patterns in a corpus of spontaneous Dutch conversation, combining phonetic analysis and Conversation Analysis. The starting point of the investigation is a study of the discourse marker eigenlijk. The thesis shows that in two pragmatic contexts in which eigenlijk is routinely used, the range of phonetic variants associated with the item is considerably narrower than across the board: in the first context — that of postpositioned self-initiated self-repair — highly reduced forms are the norm, while in the second — that of dispreferred turns in adjacency pairs — observed forms are close to canonical. Further studies of these pragmatic contexts suggest that linguistic structures used in the context of self-repair are recurrently associated with a high degree of temporal and articulatory reduction, while structures in dispreferred turns are recurrently associated with a low degree of reduction. The thesis develops an account of the empirical findings in the framework of Usage-based Phonology, a recent development in the Cognitive Linguistics paradigm. It draws out the implications of two fundamental features of the framework — its rejection of a competence– performance distinction and its adoption of an exemplar-based approach to lexical representation — for the treatment of phonetic reduction, and variation more generally, and its communicative constraints. It outlines an account in which variation is an integral part of phonological representations, and pragmatic and social constraints on speech production are represented as lexical categories. It discusses the status of effort minimisation in usage-based phonological representation, and shows how the proposed account can be accommodated in a constructionist conception of linguistic knowledge.

Phonetic Detail and the Organisation of Talk-in-interaction
This paper examines some methodological and empirical issues concerning phonetic detail and phonetic variability and the work they accomplish in everyday talk-in-interaction. By considering the phonetic and sequential design of a variety of conversational practices I show that phonetic aspects of language should in the first instance be understood as shaped by interactional considerations. I ar...
متن کاملThe Independence between the History of Usage of an Expression and Common Ground: A processing account for pragmatic effects on comprehension
It has been thought that during conversation, the effect of the history of usage of an expression on comprehension depends on common ground. We tracked listeners’ eye movements during a referential communication task in which they received instructions from two different speakers who described a referent either consistently or inconsistently with a previous description. We also manipulated cogn...
متن کاملRelevance and conversation 1
This paper presents a general argument for a relevance-based approach to the problem of connectivity in conversation. First, the potential relevance of conversation for pragmatic theory is discussed, as examples in pragmatic theory generally consist of small conversations. A typical problem for conversation analysis and pragmatic analysis is the description of uses of pragmatic connectives. The...
متن کاملLEARNER INITIATIVES ACROSS QUESTION-ANSWER SEQUENCES: A CONVERSATION ANALYTIC ACCOUNT OF LANGUAGE CLASSROOM DISCOURSE
This paper investigates learner-initiated responses to English language teachers’ referential questions and learner initiatives after teachers’ feedback moves in meaning-focused question-answer sequences to analyze how interactional practices of language teachers, their initiation and feedback moves, facilitate learner initiatives. Classroom discourse research has largely neglected learner init...
متن کاملPitch scaling as a perceptual cue for questions in German
Recent studies on the intonation of German suggest that the phonetic realization may contribute to the signaling of questions. In a previous production study polar questions, alternative questions and continuous statements were found to differ by a gradual increase in pitch scaling of a phonologically identical final rising contour [1]. Based on similar findings for Dutch Haan [2] concludes tha...
